The Jessica Jones Running Journal

jessica-jones-poster

Like a lot of people who walk in same media circles as I do, I watched all of Jessica Jones over the last week. Just like I did with Daredevil I put together a running journal of my thoughts from the first 4 episodes Going into Season 1 here’s what I know about Jessica from the comics; I’ve read Alias Vol 1 & 2, I know what she is like when she showes up in the Immortal Iron Fist and her relationship status during the Bendis New Avengers run. With that established let’s dive-in, full spoilers below.

In every form of media I live for the big moments. He’re my list of favorite comic books moments. Note I am removing manga from the discussion because I want to focus on comics and not let animes and OTPs get in the way.

Daredevil Running Journal

It’s Daredevil Day. I’m gonna track my thoughts throughout the first 3 episodes. I was initially going to do the entire series but this project started to get in the way of my enjoyment of the series so I capped it at 3. Time stamps here will give you an idea of what just happened and my reaction. One final note, this series was fantastic, the only negative thing I has to say is that I love Arrow but Daredevil is a way better version of Arrow.

I Write Myself into Various Universes

I have an active imagination, no question about that and while watching, reading or interacting with different worlds I always like to think of how I would fit in. Until now I’ve already kind of had a rough “character sketch” for myself in each universe but today I decided to take a break from comic runs to flesh out my various characters. This post totally resides in the characters I’m in love with realm so fair warning. If that didn’t scare you away then lets have some fun.

Favorite Comic Book Runs Part 1

I enjoyed breaking down my favorite things that happened last year so much I’ve decided to go back to the welland go after my favorite comic book runs. Once again this is not about what’s the best, it’s about which runs are my favorites. Couple of rules and regulations, a run needs to be 10+ issues, change of one artist is ok but the writer needs to stay for it to be the same run, it can still be ongoing and it can change books so long as it’s the same character. Basically the idea is to celebrate what a creator or team does with a certain character or cast over a defined time. It’s not a lifetime achievement award where the creator did something, left and came back, those can’t be combined. It’s about what did you bang out in a row. I’m also going to disqualify Batman runs because I already did my favorite Batman stories elsewhere so I’d be repeating myself a lot. I think this will end up being 3 parts when I finish but enough messing around, let’s get started.

The Case for the Iron Fist

Yesterday I started writing about my favorite comic book runs and I was going to finish up that post and put it up today, but also yesterday was Wednesday aka comic day. After reading Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #8 I’m so amped on the Iron Fist that I decided I’d write a post about how much I love that character and why. I honestly didn’t know anything about the Iron Fist until this year aside from he helped the Avengers hide in Avengers vs. X-Men and kinda trained Hope a little bit. However this year I was forced to help my little sister move by my parents, don’t get me wrong I love my sister but I’ve moved her twice and it is about the most painfully disorganized thing ever. Needless to say I wasn’t stoked and being the good negotiator I am, I extracted a bounty of $100 for my services which I spent at the comic shop because why wouldn’t I? In explaining my genius to the shop owner, shout out to Laughing Ogre Comics in Columbus, and talking about what I liked they recommended I pick up The Immortal Iron Fist, so I picked up The Immortal Iron Fist: the Complete Collection vol. 1 &2. This was end of October and I started a new job on November 1st so I was naturally pretty busy for the next month and they just kinda sat on my shelf while I read some of my other pick-ups: Deadly Class and Saga. As I mentioned in a previous post right before Christmas I got sick and missed two days of work, during which I binge watched Legend of Korra and read The Immortal Iron Fist, not the worst use of a sick day. By the time the tournament started up in The Immortal Iron Fist I couldn’t put it down, by the time I finished volume 1 my only thought was HOW THE FUCK IS THIS CHARATER NOT MORE POPULAR? Do yourself a favor and start reading Iron Fist comics, seriously. Here’s my pitch on why Danny Rand is one of the best characters in comics.

My OTPs

I just finished watching the Legend of Korra and at the end I wasn’t sure what I thought of Korrasami. Don’t get me wrong I think it is super cool what they did and it’s a huge deal to see that ending in a kids show. It’s just it felt a bit rushed and out of nowhere, they have the one scene where Asami compliments her hair and I feel like that’s kinda it. To me that’s not enough of a track record to earn OTP status. Now obviously this board can change when I find other shows and etc but as of today these are my OTPs. OTP stands for one true passion, I didn’t know that for like 3 months and was always confused when I read something about an OTP. Ok everyone got their sparkly shipping glasses ready? Then lets do this.

My Favorite Things This Year

2014 was an awful year, its been well documented like here and here for example. It honestly was one of the worst years of my life for a variety of reasons and I sincerely doubt there will be many people more excited to wake up tomorrow morning knowing it’s 2015. My thoughts in putting together this list this was to celebrate the stuff that made this year better and helped remind me that the world is not a terrible place. It has been a lot of fun putting this list together and remembering what it was like to have Wolverine and the X Men once a month or the delight I found in You’re the Worst appearing out of nowhere this summer. The final 5 on my list are all very special to me and are really what illuminated my year and where I went when I needed some happiness in my life this year. Without further adieu here’s my top 5 for 2014.
